Deceased Name: MELVIN PERLMAN, 65 RETIRED ATTORNEY

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in Temple Beth Shalom, Needham, for Melvin R. Perlman, 65, of Westwood, a longtime attorney. He died unexpectedly Friday in University Hospital, Boston.

Born in Boston, he was a graduate of Boston Latin School and received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Boston University. He earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan in 1943, attended Cornell Law School and graduated from the New England School of Law with a doctor of jurisprudence degree. He had lived in Westwood for 30 years.

He maintained a law practice in Boston for 30 years before moving it to his home two years ago. He retired in June.

In 1967, he was appointed by then-Massachusetts Attorney General Elliot Richardson as special assistant attorney general.

He was a member of the Westwood Democratic Town Committee, the Masons, Knights of Pythias, United Way, Boy and Girl Scouts of America and Temple Beth Shalom of Needham. He was a trustee of the Westwood Library and a charter member of Temple Beth David of Westwood.

He leaves his wife, Rita (Bennett); a daughter, Harriet Manis of Florida; two sons, Robert of Cambridge and Alan Perlman of Randolph; a sister, Sylvia Stearns of West Yarmouth; and his mother, Florence (Rodberg).

Burial will be in New Westwood Cemetery, Westwood.
